West Nile virus death toll rises to nine in Netherlands
The number of people who have died from West Nile virus in the Netherlands this year has risen to nine, while the total number of confirmed cases has reached 56, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
In its latest update, RIVM reported that 12 additional people were diagnosed with the virus and that four more patients had died from infections linked to West Nile virus.
With the newly reported cases, the number of infections recorded across the country this year increased to 56, while the death toll rose to nine.
RIVM data showed that the highest number of cases was recorded in South Holland, with 32 infections, followed by Utrecht with 12 cases.
Other reported cases were recorded in North Holland with five cases, North Brabant with four cases, Gelderland with two cases and Overijssel with one case.
West Nile virus is mainly transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. While many infections cause mild or no symptoms, the virus can lead to serious complications in some patients.
Dutch health authorities continue to monitor the spread of the virus and advise citizens to follow public health recommendations.(ILKHA)
