U.S. Navy serviceman arrested in Japan over alleged theft in taxi
A U.S. Navy serviceman stationed in southwestern Japan was arrested by local police on Sunday on suspicion of stealing a wallet and other personal belongings from a taxi.
The incident took place at around 2:15 a.m. local time in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture. According to police reports, the suspect allegedly entered a taxi where a woman was already inside, argued with her, and then took a paper bag containing a wallet, a smartphone, and other items. The total value of the stolen belongings is estimated at approximately 105,000 yen (around $661 USD).
The taxi driver immediately contacted the police after witnessing the incident. Officers responded swiftly and arrested the serviceman.The suspect is stationed at the U.S. military base in Sasebo. He has reportedly denied part of the allegations against him.
Local authorities are continuing their investigation into the case. The U.S. Navy has not yet issued an official statement regarding the arrest of its service member.
This is the latest incident involving U.S. military personnel and local residents in Japan, where several American bases are located, including in Nagasaki Prefecture. (ILKHA)
