UNICEF: Malnutrition and harsh winter conditions push Gaza’s children to the brink
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) issued a stark warning on Saturday, saying that rapidly worsening malnutrition combined with the onset of winter now poses an immediate, life-threatening danger to thousands of children trapped in the Gaza Strip under Israel’s ongoing assault.
According to UNICEF, cold temperatures, inadequate shelter, and the collapse of health services are accelerating the spread of diseases among children who are already weakened by months of starvation. The agency revealed that nearly 9,300 children under the age of five were diagnosed with acute malnutrition in October alone, a reflection of the catastrophic breakdown of basic living conditions.
UNICEF stressed that without swift action, Gaza could see a dramatic rise in preventable child deaths in the coming weeks. The agency urged the immediate opening of all border crossings and demanded that humanitarian aid be allowed to flow into Gaza without obstruction or political conditions, calling for every available supply route to be utilized to avert further loss of life.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel — fully backed by the United States and several European governments — has waged a campaign in Gaza that Palestinian groups, human rights organizations, and legal experts worldwide describe as genocidal. The assault has included mass killings, the deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure, the blocking of food and medical supplies, and the forcible displacement of entire communities. These actions continue despite multiple legally binding orders from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) demanding that Israel cease its violations and allow humanitarian access.
The toll on Gaza’s population is staggering. More than 239,000 Palestinians have been martyred or wounded, the vast majority women and children. Over 11,000 people remain missing, many believed to be buried beneath the rubble of destroyed neighborhoods. Entire districts have been wiped out, famine has claimed countless lives — especially among infants — and hundreds of thousands continue to endure displacement in makeshift shelters with no heating, clean water, or sanitation.
Humanitarian organizations warn that unless the siege is lifted and sustained relief operations begin immediately, Gaza’s children — already orphaned, starved, and traumatized — will face a wave of avoidable deaths during the winter months.
Despite the overwhelming evidence of suffering, Israel persists with its campaign, shielded diplomatically by its Western allies. Meanwhile, international calls for accountability grow louder, as Palestinian families brace for another winter under bombardment, blockade, and hunger. (ILKHA)
