UK celebrities urge Starmer to end complicity in Gaza atrocities

A powerful coalition of actors, musicians, activists, and public figures have called on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to take immediate action to halt Britain’s support for Israeli “war crimes” in Gaza, accusing the UK of complicity in the ongoing genocide against Palestinians.
The open letter, organized by the humanitarian aid group Choose Love, directly challenges the Labour government’s role in supplying arms to Israel amid its relentless military assault on Gaza, which has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, the vast majority of them civilians, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
"You can't call it 'intolerable' and keep sending arms," the letter states, demanding an immediate ceasefire, full humanitarian access, and the suspension of all UK arms exports to Israel.
Among the signatories are internationally acclaimed figures including Dua Lipa, who has been one of the few mainstream artists to publicly denounce Israel’s actions as “genocide.” Other notable voices include actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Riz Ahmed, musicians Paloma Faith, Annie Lennox, Massive Attack, and sports presenter Gary Lineker, who previously stepped down from his BBC post amid backlash for criticizing Israeli policies.
“The children of Gaza cannot wait another minute,” the letter pleads. “Prime Minister, what will you choose? Complicity in war crimes, or the courage to act?”
The urgent appeal comes as the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza worsens by the day. Since March, Israeli authorities have enforced a total blockade on food and aid, pushing Gaza’s population to the edge of mass starvation. Civilians remain trapped under siege, with aid convoys unable to reach those in desperate need.
International condemnation has surged in recent weeks after Israel resumed full-scale military operations following the collapse of a ceasefire. The intensified assault has killed thousands more, displaced nearly the entire population, and leveled entire neighborhoods.
Despite these atrocities, the UK government has continued arms sales to Israel, only suspending 30 out of 350 licenses last September — a gesture widely criticized as insufficient. While Starmer recently condemned Israel’s “egregious” actions and hinted at “further concrete actions,” he has yet to specify what, if any, steps will be taken.
Legal professionals have joined the call for accountability. Over 800 UK lawyers, including former Supreme Court justices, and nearly 400 British and Irish authors signed letters this week warning of a “plausible genocide” being carried out by Israel in Gaza. (ILKHA)
