Three killed in Spain after massive waves sweep swimmers from natural pool into sea
A powerful rogue wave struck the natural pools of Los Gigantes in Tenerife, dragging several people into the sea and leaving three dead and at least three others injured.
A deadly rogue wave hit the Los Gigantes cliffs in north-west Tenerife on Sunday, sweeping visitors from the natural pools into the ocean and causing the deaths of two men aged 35 and a woman aged 55. Emergency teams reported that the victims were taken by surprise as the wave crashed over the rocky pools around 4 p.m.
Medical crews said a woman went into cardiac arrest at the scene. She was resuscitated and airlifted to Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria Hospital. Another woman, aged 39, was also hospitalized with what authorities described as moderate injuries. Two additional individuals struggled in the water but managed to reach safety without assistance.
Local media reported that foreign tourists were among those affected, though the nationalities of the casualties have not yet been confirmed.
The incident comes just a month after severe weather triggered another massive wave on the island, killing one person and injuring nine in Puerto de la Cruz. On the same day, six French tourists were injured in a similar event in Roque de las Bodegas on the island’s northeastern coast. In total, that week’s storms left 15 injured and three dead across Tenerife.
Emergency officials said the earlier fatalities included a 79-year-old Dutch woman and a 43-year-old local resident. Another man’s body was later discovered off El Cabezo beach in Granadilla.
Authorities have issued renewed warnings urging residents and tourists to avoid coastal areas during periods of strong winds and high waves, noting that sudden and powerful sea surges continue to pose serious risks along the island’s shoreline.(ILKHA)
