Thailand flood death toll hits 25; over 440,000 affected in 12 provinces
The death toll from ongoing floods across Thailand has risen to 25, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) confirmed Wednesday, as an estimated 444,000 people across 12 provinces continue to be affected by river overflows and water runoff.
The majority of the fatalities — 19 — occurred in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok, according to the DDPM.
Authorities reported that water levels are becoming more stable and receding in several areas, but over 132,000 households are still dealing with flooding.
Rescue operations are underway, with emergency teams distributing survival kits and setting up temporary shelters in inundated communities.
Thailand’s meteorological department has issued fresh warnings of heavy rainfall expected through Sunday, raising the risk of flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in the southern region.
According to the DDPM, flooding is currently affecting 15 provinces, impacting nearly 456,000 people across more than 130,000 households.
These flooding events are part of a larger pattern of extreme rainfall, which in recent months has been exacerbated by tropical storms such as Storm Kajiki, bringing severe flooding and landslide risks to multiple regions.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered “urgent relief measures” to help the victims, and local authorities are coordinating with the DDPM to assess damages, deliver aid, and manage evacuations.
Officials warn that the situation remains volatile and are urging residents in low-lying and high-risk areas to stay alert and follow evacuation orders. (ILKHA)
