Indonesia: Mount Semeru erupts again, alert level raised to highest tier
Mount Semeru, the highest volcano on Java Island and one of Indonesia's most active, has erupted once again, prompting authorities to raise the national alert level to its highest tier amid intensifying volcanic activity.
The Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Agency confirmed the status upgrade following a new explosive outburst that sent a thick column of ash towering into the sky.
Local officials have issued urgent warnings to communities surrounding the volcano to remain on high alert, stressing the risk of further, more dangerous eruptions and the potential for fast-moving pyroclastic flows to spread down the mountain's slopes.
Monitoring stations have recorded a sharp increase in seismic tremors and volcanic emissions over recent days, leading to mandatory evacuation orders for residents in multiple villages near the crater.
Emergency teams reported that volcanic ash has already blanketed several nearby settlements, severely reducing visibility and disrupting daily life. Due to strong winds, the ash is reportedly dispersing over a considerable distance, affecting a wide zone around the crater.
Indonesia’s disaster management agency has deployed response teams to the affected region to assess the impact. Local and national authorities are coordinating efforts to provide shelter and assistance to the displaced population.
Officials cautioned that the elevated alert level would remain in place as experts continue to monitor the volcano’s behavior. The repeated eruptions of Mount Semeru in recent years have led to ongoing concerns for communities living near its slopes. (ILKHA)
