Six dead in overnight Russian strikes on Kyiv and Sumy amid ongoing peace efforts
At least six people were killed overnight Tuesday as Russia launched a new wave of attacks targeting residential buildings and energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and the northeastern Sumy region.
The strikes came despite ongoing efforts by the United States to broker an end to the nearly four-year-long conflict.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that buildings in the central Pechersk district and the eastern Dniprovskyi district were badly damaged, with video footage circulating online showing fires engulfing the structures. Ukraine’s energy ministry confirmed that energy infrastructure was also targeted, though the extent and specific nature of the damage were not detailed.
In Sumy, officials said a Russian drone struck a service truck in the region early Tuesday, following repeated attacks on the area that continued late into Monday.
The strikes followed peace talks held in Geneva on Sunday between U.S. and Ukrainian representatives regarding a potential U.S.-Russia brokered peace plan. Ukrainian delegation member Oleksandr Bevz described the discussions as “very constructive,” noting that most points on the agenda were addressed.
However, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday that Russia had not yet received the updated peace plan following the Geneva talks, leaving the future of negotiations uncertain.
The latest attacks highlight the ongoing volatility of the conflict, underscoring the challenges facing international efforts to bring a resolution to the war. (ILKHA)
