At least three people were injured after a Russian attack struck Ukraine's capital overnight on August 16, triggering multiple explosions and fires across Kyiv, Ukrainian authorities said.

Explosions were reported across several districts of the city during the early morning hours as Ukrainian authorities warned residents of a potential ballistic missile attack.

A Kyiv Independent journalist in the city centre reported hearing four powerful explosions at around 2:50 a.m. local time. Another reporter in the Pecherskyi district said six explosions were heard within approximately three minutes after the air-raid warning, leaving residents with little time to seek shelter.

The Kyiv City Military Administration reported that a commercial building caught fire in the Obolonskyi district following the attack.

Another building was reportedly set ablaze in the Holosiivskyi district, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Emergency crews were deployed to the affected areas as authorities assessed the damage and worked to contain the fires.

Ukraine's Air Force had earlier warned of a possible Russian ballistic missile attack. The warning was cancelled at approximately 2:35 a.m., but was reinstated just minutes later at 2:46 a.m.

The renewed warning was followed by explosions reported in several parts of Kyiv.

The latest attack comes amid continued Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure as the war continues.

The overnight assault follows a series of deadly Russian missile attacks across Ukraine in recent weeks.

On August 11, Russian forces reportedly struck Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia, with Ukrainian authorities saying the attacks involved North Korean ballistic missiles and Zircon cruise missiles.

The strikes in Zaporizhzhia killed seven workers at the Zaporizhstal steel plant and injured 24 people, while another civilian was reportedly wounded in Kyiv.

A Russian ballistic missile attack on August 8 killed four people, including a three-year-old child, in Kyiv and the surrounding Kyiv region, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Another ballistic missile attack on August 5 killed 17 people in Kyiv and the surrounding area.

The latest attack has again raised concerns over the continuing threat posed to civilians in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.

Emergency personnel were working at the affected sites following the overnight strikes, while authorities continued assessing damage to buildings and infrastructure.

The latest casualties add to a mounting toll from repeated missile and drone attacks during the ongoing conflict, with civilians and urban infrastructure repeatedly exposed to bombardment.
