Powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake shakes central Myanmar

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the region and triggering panic among residents.
The quake, which hit at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, had its epicenter 16 kilometers (10 miles) north-northwest of Sagaing, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Just 12 minutes after the initial tremor, a strong aftershock measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale rocked the same area, heightening fears of structural damage and possible casualties. The USGS confirmed both seismic events, noting their unusual intensity for a region not regularly exposed to such powerful earthquakes.
The tremors were felt well beyond Myanmar’s borders, with reports of buildings swaying in Bangkok, Thailand—hundreds of miles from the epicenter. In Myanmar, residents in Sagaing and surrounding towns rushed into the streets, fearing building collapses as aftershocks continued.
As of now, local authorities have not yet issued official statements regarding casualties or damage assessments. However, emergency services have begun mobilizing to affected areas, and hospitals have been placed on high alert.
The true extent of the impact is expected to become clearer in the coming hours as rescue and response teams reach more remote areas. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and prepared for potential aftershocks.
This seismic event marks one of the strongest earthquakes to hit Myanmar in recent years, drawing regional concern over its humanitarian and infrastructural consequences. (ILKHA)
