Outages in Sudan after major drone attack strikes power plant
At least two people were killed after drone attacks targeted a major power station in northern Sudan, causing widespread electricity outages across several states, according to official statements and eyewitness accounts.
Sudan’s Electricity Holding Company said the attacks struck the Al-Mogran Power Station in the city of Atbara, located in River Nile State, on Thursday. The strikes resulted in the deaths of two members of the Civil Defense, who were responding to the incident, while three others were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
In a statement, the company said that electricity transformers sustained direct damage, leading to power cuts in multiple regions. Eyewitnesses reported electricity outages in Khartoum State, Northern State, and Red Sea State, underscoring the scale of the disruption caused by the attack.
Civil Defense teams were deployed to extinguish fires and contain damage at the site, with officials describing intensive efforts to prevent further escalation. According to witnesses, two simultaneous drone strikes hit both the power station and the nearby Civil Defense headquarters. Videos circulating online showed thick columns of smoke rising over parts of Atbara following the attacks.
The assault comes amid a growing wave of drone attacks in Sudan, which have increasingly targeted vital infrastructure and military-linked facilities, particularly in areas under the control of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). Observers note that such strikes have raised concerns about the vulnerability of civilian services, including electricity supply, in the ongoing conflict.
Sudan has been mired in a deadly civil war since April 15, 2023, when fighting erupted between the SAF and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and forced millions of people to flee their homes, both within the country and across its borders.
As the war continues, attacks on critical infrastructure such as power stations are increasingly compounding the humanitarian crisis, disrupting basic services and deepening the suffering of civilians already affected by prolonged violence and instability.(ILKHA)
