Moldovan prime minister resigns, government to serve in caretaker role
Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation on Friday, bringing an end to his tenure after less than a year in office and automatically triggering the resignation of the government.
In a statement posted on social media, Munteanu said he had decided to step down after concluding that he could no longer fulfill his responsibilities in line with his principles and convictions.
"I accepted this position believing I could help bring positive change. The moment I realized I could no longer carry out my duties in accordance with my principles and beliefs, I chose to resign," he said.
Cabinet to remain until successor is appointed
Under Moldova's constitutional procedures, the resignation of the prime minister results in the government's resignation. However, the current cabinet will continue operating in a caretaker capacity until a new prime minister is nominated and a new government is approved.
President Maia Sandu thanked Munteanu for his leadership during what she described as a challenging period for the country. She also said she had hoped for greater engagement in difficult decisions and closer dialogue with the public, adding that consultations with parliamentary parties on forming a new government would begin next week.
Resignation adds to political uncertainty
Munteanu, who had served as prime minister since November 2025, did not provide specific reasons for his decision beyond citing personal principles. His resignation comes amid heightened political debate in Moldova, although he did not directly associate his departure with any particular political dispute.
The ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) retains a parliamentary majority, and the country's leadership has pledged to continue pursuing reforms and advancing Moldova's bid for membership in the European Union despite the unexpected change in government.(ILKHA)
