Medical officials: More than 6,000 amputations performed since start of Gaza genocide
The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza has deepened as medical sources report that more than 6,000 Palestinians, including 1,500 children, have undergone amputations since the beginning of the Israeli genocidal assault on October 7th, 2023.
The staggering figure reflects the devastating human cost of Israel’s relentless attacks on one of the most densely populated regions on earth.
The vast majority of these amputations resulted from airstrikes and heavy shelling that have indiscriminately targeted residential neighborhoods, schools, and shelters. Women make up 12.7% of the victims, underscoring the widespread impact on civilians and vulnerable groups.
Gaza’s health infrastructure—already crippled by 18 years of blockade—has effectively collapsed under the weight of non-stop bombardment. Hospitals run on limited power, lacking anesthetics, surgical tools, and prosthetic devices. Thousands of injured Palestinians are left untreated, many undergoing operations without proper pain relief.
Medical workers describe scenes of unimaginable horror. “These 6,000 amputations represent 6,000 human tragedies,” said a senior Gaza health official. “Every case is a story of a child, a mother, or a young man whose life has been permanently altered by this war.”
Doctors warn that Gaza is witnessing the creation of a lost generation of amputees—children who will grow up with lifelong disabilities, trauma, and no access to rehabilitation. “We have children who wake up screaming at night from pain and fear,” said a nurse at Al-Shifa Hospital. “They ask for their legs back. We have nothing to give them—not even prosthetics.”
Amid the siege, international aid deliveries remain sporadic and insufficient. Humanitarian convoys are often blocked or delayed, worsening the crisis.
Human rights advocates say the situation in Gaza is a grave indictment of international inaction. Despite mounting evidence of war crimes, the global community has failed to enforce a ceasefire or ensure protection for civilians.
“The international silence in the face of this atrocity is unacceptable,” said a spokesperson for a Palestinian rights organization. “These are not just statistics—they are human beings being systematically mutilated under siege.”
As Gaza’s hospitals overflow and thousands endure life-altering injuries, Palestinians continue to call for an end to the aggression, the lifting of the blockade, and justice for the victims of what they describe as one of the darkest chapters in their modern history. (ILKHA)
