Maldives enforces lifetime smoking ban for those born after 2007

The Maldives has become the first country in the world to introduce a lifetime smoking ban for citizens born on or after January 1, 2007, in a landmark move to protect public health and create a tobacco-free generation.
The new law, which officially took effect on November 1, 2025, prohibits anyone born in 2007 or later from buying, selling, or using cigarettes and other tobacco products for the rest of their lives.
Approved by the Cabinet on April 13 and ratified by Parliament on May 13, the law positions the island nation as a global pioneer in combating tobacco-related deaths and promoting long-term health.
Under the new regulation, violators will face penalties for possession or sale of tobacco products to restricted age groups. Authorities say the legislation aims to “break the cycle of addiction” by preventing youth exposure to smoking altogether.
Health experts and government officials hailed the decision as a “historic step” toward protecting future generations. “This measure sends a strong message that the Maldives is committed to ending the deadly tobacco epidemic,” said a Health Ministry spokesperson.
However, civil society groups have expressed concerns that illegal tobacco trade could increase as a result of the strict ban. The government has pledged tighter border and customs controls to prevent smuggling.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco use kills more than seven million people every year. In the Maldives, about one in four adults smoke, while the rate among adolescents aged 13–15 is nearly double.
The country had already banned the import, sale, and use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices by the end of 2024, paving the way for the comprehensive tobacco-free policy now in force.
With this bold step, the Maldives has set a precedent many public health advocates hope other nations will soon follow. (ILKHA)
