Public dissatisfaction with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz continues to grow, with a new opinion poll showing that a majority of respondents believe he should step down from office.

According to the latest Trendbarometer survey conducted by polling institute Forsa for RTL/ntv, 55 percent of respondents said Merz should resign as chancellor, while 40 percent believe he should remain in office.

Only 11 percent of those surveyed said they were satisfied with the chancellor's performance, underscoring the challenges facing his government.

Support for Merz's resignation was particularly strong among voters in eastern Germany, as well as supporters of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and The Left (Die Linke) parties.

The survey also found that 54 percent of respondents believe there is currently no political party capable of solving Germany's major problems, reflecting broader public frustration with the country's political landscape.

The poll comes as Merz's government continues to face criticism over its handling of economic challenges, migration policy and domestic political issues, all of which have contributed to declining public confidence in the governing coalition.

The latest findings are expected to intensify pressure on the chancellor as his government seeks to regain public support amid growing political uncertainty. The survey also highlights the increasingly fragmented political environment in Germany, where dissatisfaction with the country's established parties remains high. (ILKHA)
