Karachi building collapse: Death toll climbs to 27

The death toll from the collapse of a five-story building in Karachi’s Lyari area has risen to 27, officials confirmed on Sunday, as rescue operations near completion.
The tragic incident occurred on Fida Husain Shaikha Road near Lea Market, triggering an extensive search and rescue effort that continued through Friday night and into the weekend.
According to South Deputy Commissioner Javed Nabi Khoso, approximately 80 percent of the rescue work had been completed by Saturday. Speaking to Dawn.com on Sunday afternoon, Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaanul Haseeb Khan stated that the operation was expected to be concluded within five to six hours. While the exact number of people still trapped under the rubble remains uncertain, officials confirmed that several individuals are still unaccounted for.
Edhi Rescue Service reported the recovery of 27 bodies, including 15 men, nine women, and three children — a 13-year-old, a 10-year-old, and a one-year-old infant. All deceased victims have been moved to Civil Hospital Karachi. Additionally, five people, including three women, sustained injuries and were treated, while ten others received medical aid and were later discharged.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, speaking to the media after leading an Ashura procession, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and outlined the government’s immediate response. He confirmed that the deceased had been handed over to their families and that rescue efforts were in their final phase.
CM Shah also announced the formation of investigative committees to probe the cause of the collapse. Preliminary findings indicate the building, which was constructed only a few months ago, lacked proper approval from the Building Control Authority. “Those responsible for unauthorized construction will face strict punishment,” Shah vowed.
He further revealed that over 480 buildings in Karachi’s historic District South have been declared unsafe. The chief minister emphasized the government’s commitment to providing alternative housing for affected residents and urged citizens to verify building safety approvals before purchasing or renting properties.
While acknowledging the economic pressures that lead many low-income families to settle in hazardous buildings, Shah stressed the importance of enforcing safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The government remains focused on completing the rescue operation and holding those accountable for the disaster. (ILKHA)
