A senior official from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned that the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip remains catastrophic and intolerable, stressing that the suffering of Palestinians continues amid widespread destruction and deteriorating living conditions.

Nicola von Arx, the ICRC's Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, made the remarks following a three-day field visit to the besieged Palestinian enclave, where he met with local authorities, community representatives, humanitarian workers, and officials from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.

Speaking from Gaza City after concluding his visit, von Arx said the devastating consequences of the ongoing Israeli assault were immediately visible upon entering the Strip.

"The first thing that strikes you is the immense scale of destruction," he said, describing scenes of widespread devastation across Gaza. He also highlighted the severe overcrowding affecting displaced Palestinians, many of whom have been forced to live in extremely confined and inadequate conditions after repeated waves of displacement.

Widespread Destruction and Humanitarian Suffering

The visit, which took place between June 23 and June 25, included inspections of key humanitarian and medical facilities across the Gaza Strip. Von Arx toured the ICRC field hospital in Rafah, met with humanitarian teams operating in Deir al-Balah, and visited Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital, as well as a water desalination project serving local residents.

The senior humanitarian official witnessed firsthand the immense challenges facing Gaza's civilian population, including damaged infrastructure, strained healthcare services, and severe shortages of essential resources.

His observations come as Palestinians continue to endure the consequences of months of bombardment, destruction, displacement, and restrictions that have pushed the humanitarian situation in Gaza to critical levels.

Call for Respect of International Humanitarian Law

Von Arx emphasized that the suffering he observed among Palestinian civilians underscores the urgent need for all parties to respect international humanitarian law and protect non-combatants during armed conflicts.

He said the scenes witnessed throughout Gaza serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving human dignity and ensuring that civilians are shielded from the devastating effects of war.

According to the ICRC official, the conditions facing Gaza's population are neither sustainable nor acceptable, and the humanitarian needs of residents remain immense despite ongoing relief efforts.

Growing International Concern

Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned that Gaza's healthcare system, water infrastructure, and basic public services have been severely affected by the ongoing conflict. Aid agencies continue to call for greater protection of civilians, expanded humanitarian access, and increased international support to address the worsening crisis.

Von Arx's visit comes amid growing international concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where large sections of the population remain displaced and dependent on humanitarian assistance for survival.

His remarks add to mounting calls from international relief organizations for urgent action to alleviate civilian suffering, restore essential services, and ensure that humanitarian principles are upheld amid the continuing crisis.
