Germany struggles to refill natural gas storage facilities ahead of winter
Germany's failure to refill its natural gas storage facilities at the expected pace is raising concerns over energy security ahead of the winter season. Storage levels remain at around 50 percent, making it increasingly difficult to meet legally required targets, while opposition parties and industry representatives have criticized the government's energy policy.
Germany is required by law to raise natural gas storage levels to 80 percent capacity by November 1. However, due to the current pace of filling, even the adjusted target of 71 percent after exemptions is considered difficult to achieve.
The German Gas Transmission System Operators Association has described reaching the target at the current filling rate as "almost impossible," while experts warn of potential risks to natural gas supplies during the winter months.
The Economy and Energy Ministry's reliance mainly on market dynamics has intensified debate over energy security in the country. Opposition parties and industry representatives argue that current measures are insufficient to guarantee supply security in the event of possible disruptions.
The ministry said it has prepared emergency options that could be implemented quickly if the situation worsens. The statement noted that storage levels, LNG availability, energy infrastructure and developments in neighboring countries are being monitored closely.
Alice Weidel, co-leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, criticized the government, saying: "Facilities are half empty, and the level has never been this low. The government is endangering supply security with its wrong policies."
Michael Kellner, energy policy spokesperson for the opposition Green Party, also warned about uncertainties in energy markets, saying there were no signs that storage facilities would be filled quickly. Kellner said Germany may have to import natural gas at much higher prices to avoid supply shortages during the winter.
Germany's natural gas storage levels remain one of the most closely watched issues in Europe's largest economy as the country continues to adapt its energy supply strategy following changes caused by the Russia-Ukraine war. (ILKHA)
