Gaza health crisis deepens as clinic halts services

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) announced the immediate suspension of operations at its Al-Zaytoun medical clinic in eastern Gaza City on Tuesday, citing intense Israeli shelling that endangered medical staff and patients.
The clinic, a vital lifeline for thousands of displaced civilians, was forced to close after several shells landed nearby, according to a PRCS statement.
The closure leaves entire communities without access to essential healthcare, vaccinations, and emergency treatment, forcing families to travel long distances—often on foot—to reach overburdened alternatives. The PRCS reported that 18 of its medical facilities across Gaza have shut down since October 7, 2023, due to Israeli attacks or forced evacuations.
Gaza’s healthcare system is on the brink of collapse, strained by severe fuel shortages, depleted medical supplies, unprecedented casualty levels, and a continued blockade of aid. Since March 2, Israeli authorities have sealed Gaza’s border crossings, allowing only a fraction of the 500 daily aid trucks needed, per U.N. estimates. Without fuel, hospitals cannot power life-saving equipment, and ambulances remain grounded.
The ongoing Israeli military campaign has killed or injured over 194,000 Palestinians since October 2023, with over 11,000 missing, many feared trapped under rubble. Famine conditions are worsening, with dozens of children dying from malnutrition, particularly in northern Gaza, where aid access is most restricted.
International organizations, including Doctors Without Borders and the World Health Organization, have condemned Israeli attacks on medical infrastructure as a systematic effort to dismantle Gaza’s healthcare system, violating international humanitarian law. The PRCS and aid groups are urgently calling for an end to attacks on medical facilities, unhindered aid access, restored fuel and medical supplies, and protection for medical personnel.
Without immediate international intervention, thousands more face death from hunger, disease, and medical neglect, aid agencies warn. (ILKHA)
