Gaza crisis deepens: Israeli airstrikes hit UNRWA shelters, displace thousands

The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, has reported that Israeli forces have struck 10 UNRWA facilities in Gaza City over the past four days, including seven schools and two clinics currently sheltering thousands of displaced Palestinians.
In a post on UNRWA’s official X account, Lazzarini described the situation as dire, stating: “No place and no one is safe.” The escalating airstrikes have forced countless families to flee under harsh conditions, with many heading south in search of safety. Human rights organizations have warned that the systematic destruction of high-rise residential buildings in Gaza City may be part of a broader Israeli-American plan to forcibly displace residents outside the Gaza Strip.
The attacks have also severely disrupted essential services. UNRWA was forced to suspend healthcare at al-Shati refugee camp, the only medical facility north of Wadi Gaza, while vital water and sanitation systems are now operating at only half capacity, worsening the hardships faced by already vulnerable communities.
Lazzarini called for an immediate ceasefire to halt the violence and protect civilians, stressing the urgent need for international intervention to address the escalating humanitarian disaster. The targeting of UNRWA facilities, which provide critical support to Palestinian families, has drawn widespread condemnation, as thousands continue to face displacement, injury, and loss of access to essential services amid the ongoing attacks.
The UNRWA chief’s remarks highlight the human cost of Israel’s military campaign, with civilians—particularly children and displaced families—bearing the brunt of the relentless bombardment in Gaza City and its northern neighborhoods. (ILKHA)
