5.5-Magnitude earthquake strikes El Oro province in Ecuador
A 5.5-magnitude earthquake rattled southern Ecuador’s El Oro province, with tremors felt across nearby regions, including Guayas and Loja.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck 11.5 kilometers southeast of the town of Arenillas at 19:05 local time, originating at a depth of 73.6 kilometers. The Ecuadorian Geophysical Institute reported a slightly higher magnitude of 6.1.
No official reports of casualties or property damage have been confirmed so far. Authorities have warned residents to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks and have mobilized emergency and search-and-rescue teams to assess the situation.
The tremor was also felt near the Peru border, raising concerns over the vulnerability of local communities in the seismic-prone region. Ecuador, located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, has experienced several destructive earthquakes in recent years, highlighting the ongoing need for preparedness and rapid response measures.(ILKHA)
