UNRWA: Gaza buried under 61 million tons of debris after two years of Israeli aggression

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) revealed that the Gaza Strip has been covered by more than 61 million tons of debris following over two years of continuous Israeli bombardment and blockade.
The UN agency said on Thursday that “entire neighborhoods have been erased, and families are searching through the ruins for water and shelter,” underscoring the devastating scale of destruction left by the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza.
UNRWA emphasized that despite severe restrictions and repeated obstructions imposed by the occupying regime, its teams continue delivering lifesaving humanitarian aid across the besieged enclave. The agency shared a video on social media showing the widespread devastation across Gaza, where once-crowded residential areas now lie in ruins.
According to UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, the agency has secured enough medicine, essential supplies, and food to meet the needs of Gaza’s population for the next three months.
Last year, the Israeli parliament (Knesset) voted to suspend UNRWA’s operations in the occupied territories, accusing the agency’s staff of alleged involvement in the October 7, 2023 attacks. However, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) later rejected these claims, affirming that Israel had provided no evidence to support its accusations.
The ICJ further ruled that Israel is obliged under the Geneva Conventions to allow and facilitate humanitarian assistance from international bodies, including UNRWA and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), ensuring aid reaches civilians in Gaza.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, since October 2023, Israel’s ongoing military aggression has killed more than 68,000 Palestinians and injured over 170,000 others, while thousands remain trapped under the rubble.
UNRWA reiterated its commitment to continue humanitarian efforts in Gaza despite immense challenges, warning that millions of Palestinians remain at risk as long as the Israeli blockade and military operations persist.(ILKHA)
