Russian envoy claims alleged detention abuses in Kyiv reflect systemic problem
Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik claimed that allegations surrounding a secret detention facility and the alleged mistreatment of detainees in Ukraine's Kyiv region were not isolated incidents but reflected what he described as a long-standing systemic problem across the country.
Speaking to Sputnik, Miroshnik alleged that the reported developments in the Kyiv region were part of broader practices that had continued for an extended period rather than being limited to a single location.
He also claimed that relatives of people allegedly subjected to forced military conscription, along with segments of the Ukrainian public, had become increasingly critical of such practices, describing the reported developments as the result of longstanding policies.
Commenting on reports that officials from the Ukrainian National Guard and the Presidential Office travelled to the Kyiv region following the allegations, Miroshnik claimed this indicated that the Ukrainian authorities were aware of accusations concerning detention facilities and the prison system.
The Russian envoy also criticized international human rights organizations, alleging that they had failed to adequately investigate claims relating to detention centres and the alleged mistreatment of detainees in Ukraine. He argued that their response to the allegations should be subject to greater scrutiny.
Ukrainian authorities have not publicly commented on Miroshnik's statements.(ILKHA)
