Türkiye welcomes UN Security Council decision to lift sanctions on Syrian leaders
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the latest United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution that removes two senior Syrian officials from international sanctions lists.
In an official statement responding to a media query, Ministry Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli said Türkiye “welcomes the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution No. 2799 (2025), which delists Ahmed al-Sharaa, President of Syria, and Anas Hattab, Minister of Interior of Syria, from the relevant UNSC sanctions list.”
Keçeli emphasized that Ankara views this development as a constructive step toward normalizing Syria’s position in the international arena.
“We will continue to support these and similar steps aimed at erasing the negative legacy of the former era on the current Syrian administration and the Syrian people,” he stated, underscoring Türkiye’s commitment to regional stability.
He added that the complete lifting of sanctions, along with Syria’s reintegration into the international community, would help foster “sustainable stability and development in the country.”
The UNSC Resolution No. 2799 (2025) marks another milestone in the gradual easing of international restrictions imposed during Syria’s long-standing civil conflict, as global actors increasingly discuss pathways for reconstruction and reconciliation in the war-torn nation. (ILKHA)
