Türkiye has launched a comprehensive academic mobilization ahead of the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), inviting universities and research institutions from around the world to contribute scientific research, innovative technologies and policy solutions to support global climate action.

Scheduled to take place in the Mediterranean city of Antalya from November 9 to 20, 2026, COP31 is expected to bring together governments, international organizations, scientists, academics and civil society representatives to advance international cooperation on climate change.

As part of the preparations, the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) is coordinating a nationwide initiative that will unite 208 universities through a centralized Academic Application Platform, positioning Turkish higher education institutions at the forefront of science diplomacy and climate innovation.

Under the initiative, universities, research centers and international academic networks are invited to submit research projects, workshops, technological solutions and policy proposals through the COP31 Academy Portal.

Applications will be accepted until August 14, 2026, with project submissions coordinated through university rectorships for both institutional and individual participants.

According to organizers, the initiative aims to transform scientific knowledge into practical climate solutions while strengthening cooperation between academia, policymakers and industry.

The program focuses on several priority areas, including zero waste and the circular economy, clean and renewable energy, the green transition, climate finance, sustainable development and resilient urban planning.

Officials say these themes reflect the key global challenges expected to dominate discussions during the COP31 summit and are intended to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration across scientific fields.

A central objective of the initiative is to strengthen science diplomacy by positioning Türkiye's higher education sector as the official "Academic Ambassador" of COP31 under the leadership of the Council of Higher Education.

The initiative also seeks to expand international academic cooperation by connecting universities with global research organizations, young scientists and cross-border laboratory networks working on climate-related issues.

Organizers believe the platform will promote the exchange of knowledge, accelerate technological innovation and foster long-term partnerships aimed at improving global climate resilience.

By bringing together researchers from Türkiye and abroad, the initiative is expected to contribute scientific recommendations and innovative solutions that can support negotiations and policy discussions during COP31 while reinforcing the role of higher education in addressing one of the world's most pressing environmental challenges.
