Turkish parliament to debate harsher penalties for forest arson

Turkish Parliament is preparing to discuss a new bill that would impose stricter penalties for forest arson, as Türkiye battles a devastating wildfire season.
The legislation, proposed by Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) lawmaker Öztürk, aims to address the rising threat of environmental destruction caused by both negligent and intentional acts of arson.
Under the proposed law, individuals found guilty of starting forest fires due to negligence or non-compliance with regulations could face up to 10 years in prison. Deliberate acts of arson would carry a life sentence.
Öztürk emphasized the urgency of the measures, stating, “These measures are essential to protect our natural heritage and ensure public safety,” in response to a surge in arson cases that have caused widespread damage.
The bill, expected to reach the parliamentary floor in the coming weeks, comes as Türkiye grapples with one of its worst wildfire seasons in recent years. The Aegean region, particularly İzmir Province, has been severely affected, with areas like Seferihisar, Menderes, and Hatay facing extensive destruction. Over 50,000 residents have been evacuated, and the fires have claimed two lives—an elderly man in Ödemiş and a forestry worker. Approximately 200 homes have been destroyed, with many others heavily damaged.
Firefighting efforts, involving both aerial and ground units, have been hampered by strong winds, complicating containment. The crisis has also disrupted critical infrastructure, with İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport temporarily closed, leading to widespread flight cancellations and diversions.
As Türkiye confronts this environmental emergency, lawmakers hope the proposed legislation will act as a strong deterrent and bolster efforts to combat forest arson, safeguarding the nation’s natural resources and communities. (ILKHA)
