July 15: Türkiye celebrates Democracy and National Unity Day

The Presidency’s Head of Communications, Burhanettin Duran, issued a heartfelt message on social media today, marking the ninth anniversary of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, a day that commemorates Türkiye’s heroic resistance against the failed coup attempt in 2016 orchestrated by the Fetullahist Terrorist Organization (FETO).
In his statement, Duran described July 15 as “the name of an epic resistance” that thwarted a “treacherous” coup attempt aimed at undermining Türkiye’s independence and future. He attributed the victory to the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the unwavering courage of the Turkish people. “Millions, whether women, men, young or old, took to the streets and showed the whole world what a nation imbued with faith can dare to do,” Duran said.
The failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016, saw rogue elements within the Turkish military, loyal to FETO, attempt to overthrow the government. Tanks rolled into the streets of Ankara and Istanbul, the parliament was bombed, and strategic locations, including bridges and airports, were seized. However, the plot was foiled as citizens from all walks of life, responding to President Erdoğan’s call via a televised broadcast, flooded the streets to confront the coup plotters. Over 250 people were martyred, and more than 2,000 were injured in the violent clashes that ensued.
Duran emphasized the nation’s gratitude to the martyrs and veterans who “fearlessly sacrificed their lives with great heroism.” He vowed that Türkiye would continue to achieve “historic breakthroughs” in their honor to strengthen the country and its people. “We can never fully repay our debt of gratitude to our martyrs and veterans,” he noted, adding, “On the occasion of July 15, Democracy and National Unity Day, I commemorate our revered martyrs with mercy and honour our veterans with gratitude.”
The message concluded with a powerful declaration: “The Name of Victory: Türkiye.”
Since the coup attempt, the Turkish government has pursued extensive measures to dismantle FETO’s network, which had infiltrated state institutions, including the military, judiciary, and education sectors. Thousands of suspects have been prosecuted, and the government continues to designate July 15 as a national day to honor the resilience and unity of the Turkish people.
Across Türkiye, ceremonies, marches, and memorial events are being held today to mark the occasion, with citizens gathering to pay tribute to the sacrifices made nine years ago. The day serves as a reminder of the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its democracy and sovereignty. (ILKHA)
