Istanbul tremor topples empty building, emergency teams mobilize

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Istanbul on Wednesday, causing an abandoned three-story building in the Fatih district to collapse.
The tremor, felt strongly across the Marmara region and surrounding provinces, prompted the immediate deployment of firefighting and emergency response teams to the affected area.
The collapsed structure was unoccupied at the time, and preliminary reports confirm no casualties. Search and security operations continue as authorities assess the situation. Initial findings by Turkish officials indicate no major damage or loss of life across the city following the quake.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) stated: “All relevant institutions are on alert, and field inspections are underway.” Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya added, “Our teams from AFAD and other institutions have begun assessments. I extend my best wishes to all citizens affected by the tremor.”
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed concern via social media, saying: “We are closely monitoring developments. I extend my best wishes to our citizens.”
The Istanbul Governor’s Office urged residents to remain calm, avoid unnecessary car travel to prevent congestion, and refrain from overloading mobile networks. Authorities also advised staying away from potentially compromised buildings and avoiding damaged structures to ensure safety. (ILKHA)
