Erdoğan to visit Qatar to offer condolences following death of Father Emir Sheikh Hamad
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will travel to Qatar on Tuesday to offer condolences following the passing of the Father Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, according to a statement issued by the Turkish Presidency.
The Presidency announced that President Erdoğan will make the condolence visit on July 14, 2026, expressing Türkiye's solidarity with the Qatari leadership and people during the period of national mourning.
"Our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, will make a condolence visit to Qatar on July 14, 2026, due to the passing of the Father Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani," the statement said.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who had reportedly been undergoing medical treatment for an extended period, passed away on Sunday at the age of 74.
He was laid to rest at Lusail Cemetery in the Qatari capital, Doha, following funeral proceedings attended by members of the royal family and senior officials.
In response to his passing, Qatari authorities declared a four-day official mourning period across the country, with flags flown at half-mast and official events postponed.
Sheikh Hamad served as Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013, overseeing a period of rapid economic development and significant expansion of the country's diplomatic and international influence.
In 2013, he voluntarily transferred power to his son, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, marking the first peaceful voluntary transfer of power in the country's modern history.
President Erdoğan's visit underscores the close strategic partnership between Türkiye and Qatar, whose bilateral relations have deepened over the years through extensive cooperation in political, economic, defense, and regional affairs.
The condolence visit is expected to reaffirm the longstanding ties between Ankara and Doha while conveying Türkiye's support to the Qatari leadership and people during their time of mourning. (ILKHA)
