4.9-magnitude earthquake shakes southern Turkish tourist hub
A moderate 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck the popular Mediterranean resort province of Antalya this afternoon. The quake’s epicenter was located in the Serik district, causing brief alarm among residents and tourists.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) confirmed the details of the seismic event, stating the earthquake occurred precisely at 13:21 local time.
According to AFAD’s official statement, the earthquake was registered at a considerable depth of 28.25 kilometers underground, which may have helped to disperse some of the seismic energy before it reached the surface.
While initial reports indicate that the shaking was felt across a wide area of the province, including the city center and surrounding districts, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage. Local authorities and AFAD teams have initiated assessments across Serik and neighboring areas to survey any potential impact.
Antalya is situated near complex fault lines, making it susceptible to seismic activity. AFAD continues to monitor the situation closely for any potential aftershocks and has advised the public to remain vigilant. (ILKHA)
