The United States has confirmed for the first time that it has deployed a weapon with offensive capabilities into Earth’s orbit, marking a significant expansion of Washington’s military posture in space.

US Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink said the “on-orbit” weapon was deployed to protect American forces from hostile actions and respond to emerging threats in space.

Speaking Monday at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference, Meink said the United States was prepared to confront what he described as “evolving threats,” but did not disclose the weapon’s specific capabilities, its intended targets or when it was placed into orbit.

The announcement represents an increasingly explicit acknowledgment of the US military’s preparations for potential conflict beyond Earth’s atmosphere, where satellites play a critical role in communications, navigation, intelligence and military operations.

US military officials have previously warned that Russia and China are developing capabilities that could be used to disrupt, disable or destroy American satellites during a future conflict.

Washington has increasingly sought to strengthen its military presence in space in response, arguing that the growing dependence of modern armed forces on space-based systems has made satellites potential targets in any major confrontation.

The United States established the Space Force in 2019 as a separate military branch responsible for organizing and developing the country’s space capabilities.

The disclosure comes amid growing competition among major powers over military technologies in orbit, raising concerns that the expansion of offensive space capabilities could accelerate an arms race beyond Earth.
