UN says 94% of Gaza's population needs shelter and essential household items
The United Nations (UN) says an overwhelming majority of people in the Gaza Strip remain in urgent need of shelter and basic household items as the humanitarian crisis continues amid ongoing Israeli regime attacks and restrictions.
UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, speaking at a press briefing in New York on World Humanitarian Day, cited assessments by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) showing that 94% of Gaza's population requires shelter assistance and essential household items.
According to the UN, Israeli regime airstrikes, artillery shelling and other military operations continue to expose civilians to death, injury and other forms of harm across the enclave.
Dujarric said three out of every four families are facing critical or catastrophic levels of hunger while living in shelters already suffering from severe shortages of fuel, electricity and basic household supplies.
He added that restrictions have severely affected people's ability to sleep safely, prepare food, bathe, store food and water, maintain adequate lighting and cope with extreme temperatures.
The UN spokesperson also said the bodies of 50 Palestinians, believed to have been killed in earlier Israeli regime attacks, had recently been recovered from beneath the rubble and buried.
He noted that debris removal and body recovery operations remain extremely difficult due to restrictions on the entry of heavy machinery, spare parts and other essential equipment, as well as limited access to large areas within the Gaza Strip.
The UN has repeatedly warned that continued hostilities, access constraints and shortages of humanitarian supplies are deepening the humanitarian emergency and increasing the needs of civilians across the territory.(ILKHA)
