Turkish FM Hakan Fidan to attend informal UN-hosted meeting on Cyprus in New York

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will participate in an informal meeting on the Cyprus issue, scheduled to take place in New York on July 16–17, 2025.
The gathering will be held under the auspices of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
According to the official statement released by the Ministry, the informal meeting will bring together relevant parties in a broader format to discuss the current state of affairs on the island. The agenda includes a review of progress in the six cooperation areas previously agreed upon by the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides during a similar format meeting held in Geneva in March.
“The meeting will serve as an opportunity for all sides to exchange views and evaluate developments in areas of cooperation agreed upon earlier this year,” the Foreign Ministry noted.
The discussions are expected to focus on confidence-building measures and mechanisms aimed at fostering dialogue between the two communities on the island, which has remained divided since 1974. Key topics likely include energy cooperation, environmental protection, disaster preparedness, trade facilitation, cultural heritage preservation, and combating irregular migration—areas outlined in past dialogue efforts facilitated by the UN.
Minister Fidan’s participation underscores Türkiye’s continued commitment to supporting a constructive dialogue and a two-state solution based on sovereign equality and equal international status for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a position consistently advocated by Ankara.
While the meeting is informal and not expected to produce binding outcomes, it is viewed as part of the UN’s ongoing efforts to revive momentum in the Cyprus peace process, which has seen limited progress in recent years despite intermittent diplomatic engagement. (ILKHA)
