Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger has resigned from his position on May 7 due to a series of resignations from his caretaker cabinet, which made his position untenable.

President Zuzana Caputova has nominated Ludovit Odor, the Vice-Governor of the National Bank of Slovakia, to lead a technocratic cabinet until snap elections are held in September.

Caputova emphasized the need for stability, order, expertise, and a return to decent politics in Slovakia.

This appointment of a technocratic cabinet marks the end of the center-right coalition that came to power in March 2020 after mass protests against Prime Minister Robert Fico following the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée.

The political turmoil in the nation of 5.4 million inhabitants escalated during the course of this week.

On Thursday, Agriculture Minister Samuel Vlcan declared his resignation following a controversy involving a 1.4-million-euro ($1.6 million) subsidy awarded to his company. (ILKHA)
