New Hagia Sophia Mosque opens in Paris, strengthening Islamic presence in Europe

The newly constructed Hagia Sophia Mosque in Paris was officially opened on Sunday in a ceremony led by Ali Erbaş, President of Religious Affairs of Türkiye.
The mosque, hailed as a “sister” to Istanbul’s renowned Hagia Sophia Mosque, marks a significant addition to the religious and cultural landscape of the French capital.
During the inauguration ceremony, Erbaş emphasized thALe historical and spiritual importance of mosques in Islamic civilization. He referenced the Prophet Muhammad’s establishment of Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina as a foundational moment in Islamic history, highlighting how mosques have long served as centers of community, unity, and peace.
“Mosques are the most important centers of civilization,” Erbaş declared. “Islam has expanded around mosques and masjids, ensuring people live in harmony, peace, and solidarity.”
Underscoring the moral and ethical dimensions of Islam, Erbaş cited a well-known hadith: “A Muslim is someone from whose hand and tongue people are safe.” He urged the Muslim community to embody this principle in their daily lives and called for the nurturing of future generations through mosque-centered education in values like honesty, integrity, and compassion.
“Mosques are not merely places of worship, but means to live our religion more fully and become better individuals,” he added.
After delivering his remarks, Erbaş led the ceremonial ribbon-cutting and the noon prayer, offering a special prayer of thanks. He expressed deep appreciation for those who contributed to the mosque’s completion, both financially and spiritually.
“May Allah grant us the opportunity to use this mosque for the moral and spiritual development of our children and youth,” he said.
The Hagia Sophia Mosque is expected to serve as a spiritual and cultural hub for Muslims in Paris, promoting Islamic teachings, interfaith dialogue, and communal harmony at a time when religious identity continues to shape social discourse across Europe. (ILKHA)
