Israeli Knesset chairman slams Gaza genocide: "What are we fighting for?"

Knesset Finance Committee Chairman Moshe Gafni publicly questioned the purpose of Israel’s brutal war on Gaza, which has been widely condemned as a genocidal campaign targeting the Palestinian people.
Speaking during a committee session on Wednesday, Gafni challenged the rationale behind the relentless assault that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and brought Gaza’s infrastructure to the brink of collapse.
“I do not understand what we are fighting for in Gaza,” Gafni said, following the deaths of seven Israeli soldiers this week. “What are we going to do there that soldiers are being killed all the time?”
His remarks reflect growing internal dissent in Israel, as the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza becomes impossible to ignore. The Israeli military’s indiscriminate bombing campaigns, deliberate starvation tactics, and siege policies have been denounced by international human rights organizations as war crimes and acts of genocide.
Gafni’s appeal for change included a call for outside intervention, invoking former U.S. President Donald Trump to demand an end to the violence and secure the release of hostages.
“It’s impossible not to question how a week that began with a major Israeli achievement has led to the tragic loss of seven heroic soldiers in Gaza,” he said, adding that the situation is “absurd” and demands immediate reassessment.
In a powerful statement of solidarity with these sentiments, a coalition of Israeli voices—traditionally silent or complicit in the government’s military agenda—urged a swift end to the bloodshed.
“The time has come to show courage and speak plainly: Bring the hostages home; end the fighting,” the forum declared. “This is the only viable solution, the only path to achieving an Israeli victory.”
Shas party leader MK Aryeh Deri added his voice to the growing chorus of concern, stating, “Now, more than ever, the conditions to end the war in Gaza have been created.”
These statements come amid overwhelming evidence of Israel’s crimes in Gaza: entire neighborhoods have been flattened, families annihilated, and children killed in what Palestinians describe as a campaign of extermination. International calls for accountability and justice continue to grow, with global protests demanding an end to Israeli impunity.
As the voices for peace gain traction—even from within Israel’s power centers—the world is watching to see if those in charge will choose justice and humanity over occupation and bloodshed. (ILKHA)
