Israeli forces withdraw from Netzarim Axis

Israeli occupation forces have completed their withdrawal from the Netzarim Axis, southwest of Gaza City, marking a significant development in the ongoing ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Resistance.
According to local sources, the retreat began from the coastal point in the west, passing through the devastated al-Maghraqa area and extending to Salah al-Din Street. The withdrawal has led to the continued return of displaced Palestinians from the south back to their homes in northern Gaza, as agreed under the ceasefire terms.
The withdrawal has left behind widespread destruction across the corridor. Reports indicate a noticeable increase in vehicle movement toward northern Gaza on Sunday morning, with vehicles being subjected to security scans before passing through.
For months, the Netzarim Axis served as a critical point of Israeli control, effectively dividing Gaza into two sections—north and south. Initially, Israeli officials had insisted on maintaining control over the corridor even after hostilities ceased, citing strategic importance.
The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth previously reported that the Netzarim Axis played a crucial role in settlers' aspirations to return to northern Gaza. However, after the recent ceasefire deal, the Israeli army began its gradual retreat.
Israeli Channel 14 reported that some soldiers left the Netzarim Axis in tears, believing their year-long military efforts in Gaza had been futile. Meanwhile, far-right resigned Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir described the reopening of the corridor as a “victory for Hamas” and a “humiliating aspect of the deal.”
Following the Israeli withdrawal, thousands of displaced Palestinians have begun the journey home, using both the coastal road, which had been impassable for months, and Salah al-Din Street, now open to vehicle traffic for the first time since the invasion.
The full ramifications of the withdrawal are still unfolding, but for many Palestinians, the ability to return home marks a significant moment after months of displacement and conflict. (ILKHA)
