Israel’s clan project backfires: Hamas captures weapons and cash

Hamas has seized control of weapons, vehicles, and cash originally supplied by Israel to anti-Hamas clans in the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli media outlet Mako.
The development has sparked outrage among Palestinians, who view the strategy as a failed attempt to undermine their resistance and sow division within their communities.
Hamas reportedly captured 45 pickup trucks, hundreds of Kalashnikov rifles, machine guns, grenades, and substantial sums of cash that Israel had funneled to local clans in an effort to weaken the Palestinian resistance movement. Additionally, Hamas has taken control of advanced communication systems and humanitarian aid trucks, further strengthening its position in Gaza.
Palestinian activists and leaders have condemned Israel’s strategy as a manipulative tactic designed to destabilize Gaza’s social fabric while arming factions to serve Israeli interests. “This so-called ‘clan project’ was nothing more than a colonial scheme to fracture Palestinian unity,” said Nour Abu Salem, a Gaza-based community organizer. “Hamas’ ability to reclaim these resources demonstrates the resilience of our people against such divisive plots.”
The plan, intended to create a governance alternative to Hamas, has drawn sharp criticism even within Israel’s security establishment. A senior Israeli officer, quoted anonymously by Mako, admitted, “We helped Hamas rearm. Everyone knew this plan would collapse.” Critics of the strategy draw parallels to Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000, when weapons supplied to local allies were seized by Hezbollah, strengthening the Lebanese resistance movement.
As Israeli forces withdraw from parts of Gaza under a fragile ceasefire framework, Palestinian observers warn that Hamas is poised to further consolidate its control. The seized assets, originally intended to weaken the group, are now bolstering its capabilities. “Israel’s miscalculations have only empowered the resistance,” said Abu Salem. “The Palestinian people will not be subdued by such tactics.”
The developments highlight the failure of Israel’s efforts to suppress Palestinian self-determination, with many in Gaza viewing Hamas’ actions as a testament to the enduring strength of their cause. (ILKHA)
