Several US military aircraft were damaged in Iranian strikes on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, CBS News reported.
The attacks, carried out overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday, reportedly caused minor damage to around eight US F-15 fighter jets. The aircraft were subsequently repaired and returned to service, according to the sources.
An A-10 Thunderbolt, widely known as the “Warthog,” was also reportedly hit and sustained more serious damage, including the loss of one of its wings.
No US fatalities have been reported in connection with the strikes in Jordan.
The attacks came amid a rapidly escalating confrontation between Iran and the United States. On Tuesday, Washington said it had struck five Iranian tankers, claiming the operation was carried out in retaliation for an Iranian attack on a US Navy vessel.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later said it had launched attacks against eight tankers and two warships, as well as the US military base in Jordan.
The reported damage to American aircraft underscores the growing military pressure being placed on US forces across the region and highlights Iran’s ability to strike targets linked to the US military presence beyond its borders.
US forces in Jordan reportedly fired more than 30 Patriot interceptor missiles to defend the base against the Iranian attacks. The extensive use of the defensive system comes as American officials have warned of shrinking stocks of Patriot missiles and declining supplies of other precision-guided munitions.
The developments could further complicate Washington’s military posture in the region, particularly as US forces face mounting demands on air-defense systems and precision weapons.
From Tehran’s perspective, the strikes form part of a broader response to what Iranian authorities describe as continued US military aggression. The reported damage inflicted on American aircraft at a key regional base also serves as a reminder that Washington’s military presence in the Middle East carries growing risks as tensions with Iran continue to escalate.
