Greece declares state of emergency after uranium found in water supply

Authorities in northern Greece have declared a state of emergency in the municipalities of Serres, Lefkona, and Christos following the alarming discovery of elevated uranium levels in the local water supply.
The decision, announced by Civil Protection Secretary-General Nikos Papaefstathiou and prompted by a formal request from Serres Mayor Varvara Mitliaga, will remain in force until June 26.
The emergency measures empower local authorities to expedite infrastructure repairs, access emergency funds, and deploy specialized resources to manage the public health threat. Approximately 2,000 households are directly affected by the contamination, with residents instructed not to use tap water for drinking or cooking purposes.
Emergency provisions of clean drinking water have begun, with local officials distributing bottled water and deploying tankers to supply the impacted communities.
“This is a serious situation, and the health and safety of our citizens is our top priority,” said Mayor Mitliaga. “The emergency declaration enables us to respond swiftly and efficiently to resolve the issue and protect public health.”
Investigations into the source of the uranium contamination are ongoing. Officials have yet to determine how the radioactive material entered the municipal water system. Environmental and health authorities are conducting tests while working to restore safe water access as soon as possible.
Local leaders have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with emergency measures, emphasizing that all available resources are being used to mitigate the crisis. (ILKHA)
