Azerbaijan, Syria commit to strengthened bilateral cooperation

Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev have pledged to deepen bilateral relations during a landmark meeting at Zogulba Palace in Baku, marking a new chapter in Syria-Azerbaijan ties after years of strained relations.
The high-level talks focused on energy cooperation, with both leaders discussing a natural gas export deal to deliver Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Türkiye. The initiative aims to address Syria’s ongoing energy crisis and support its post-conflict recovery.
President Aliyev described the visit as a “turning point,” highlighting recent diplomatic exchanges, including an Azerbaijani delegation’s trip to Syria, where cooperation projects were explored. He expressed optimism about building a constructive partnership under Syria’s new leadership.
President al-Sharaa acknowledged Azerbaijan’s support during Syria’s hardships and voiced regret over past policies that distanced Damascus from allies like Azerbaijan. “We are committed to rebuilding those bridges,” he said, referencing a prior meeting with Aliyev at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum.
Beyond energy, the leaders discussed humanitarian and cultural collaboration. Azerbaijan offered scholarships for Syrian students and assistance in restoring Syria’s cultural heritage, drawing on its own experience in post-war reconstruction.
The talks signal Syria’s diplomatic reorientation, with Azerbaijan emerging as a key partner in its reconstruction efforts and regional reintegration. Both leaders committed to a multidimensional partnership, encompassing political dialogue, economic recovery, and cultural exchange.
This visit underscores Azerbaijan’s growing role in supporting Syria’s recovery, as Damascus seeks to strengthen ties with regional allies. (ILKHA)
