At least 30 killed in floods and landslides in southern Ethiopia
At least 30 people have been killed in floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in the Gamo Zone of southern Ethiopia, local sources reported.
The administration of the Gamo Zone in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR) reported via social media that the landslides occurred on Tuesday due to intense rainfall, causing flooding in several settlements across three districts.
Officials added that debris from the landslides and floodwaters has blocked public transport routes, disrupted mobility, and hindered rescue operations in the affected areas.
Tilahun Kebede, President of the Southern Ethiopia Regional State, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured that the regional government would provide all necessary support to those affected.
He also urged communities living in high-risk areas to take precautionary measures, noting, “We are in the rainy season, and such accidents can happen again. Communities must remain vigilant.”
Ethiopia is currently experiencing its rainy season, which began in February and is expected to continue into March. Local authorities have warned that further heavy rains may trigger additional landslides and flooding.
The disaster highlights the ongoing vulnerability of southern Ethiopia to seasonal rainfall and the importance of preparedness measures for at-risk communities. (ILKHA)
