Japan launches fourth Michibiki positioning satellite

Japan has successfully launched its fourth Michibiki satellite, further developing its independent satellite positioning system.
The H3 rocket, which has seen improvements following an initial launch failure in 2023, lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Approximately 30 minutes after liftoff, the Michibiki satellite successfully detached from the launch vehicle. This marks the fourth consecutive successful launch for the H3 rocket.
Japan's developing system, similar to the Global Positioning System (GPS), currently utilizes four Michibiki satellites to provide positioning information for smartphones, car navigation, and other applications. Beyond location services, the Michibiki satellites also play a crucial role in distributing earthquake and other emergency alerts to areas where traditional radio communications may be unavailable.
The Japanese government's long-term plan involves expanding the constellation to seven satellites. This expansion aims to provide Japan with independent access to precise positioning data, reducing reliance on foreign satellite systems like GPS. The completion of this project will significantly enhance Japan's capabilities in various sectors reliant on accurate location information. (ILKHA)
