Türkiye slams Israel’s seizure of Madleen as ‘act of piracy’

Türkiye has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s military intervention against the Gaza-bound aid vessel Madleen, denouncing the act as a flagrant breach of international law and a threat to global maritime security.
In a press release issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Ankara slammed the Israeli government for intercepting the humanitarian ship in international waters, stating that the vessel was carrying essential aid for the besieged Gaza Strip and included Turkish nationals among its crew.
“The intervention by Israeli forces against the vessel Madleen, which was carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza and included Turkish citizens on board while navigating in international waters, constitutes a blatant violation of international law,” the statement read.
The Turkish government characterized the operation as unlawful and aggressive, accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration of acting like a “terror state.”
“This unlawful and aggressive action by the Netanyahu administration—an act that endangers freedom of navigation and maritime security—once again reveals Israel’s conduct as that of a terror state,” the ministry said.
Ankara’s rebuke comes amid growing global criticism of Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza and its continued obstruction of aid deliveries, which humanitarian organizations say are exacerbating famine and health crises across the Palestinian territory.
“The international community’s justified outcry against Israel’s genocidal policies, including its deliberate use of hunger as a weapon in Gaza and its obstruction of humanitarian assistance, is growing stronger,” the ministry added.
Türkiye reiterated its unwavering support for the Palestinian people and emphasized that silencing humanitarian voices would not succeed.
“Such oppressive and illegal actions will not silence those who advocate for human dignity, justice, and universal values.”
Calling on the international community to take urgent and coordinated action, Türkiye urged the enforcement of international law and accountability for what it described as ongoing Israeli crimes.
“The delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza is a moral and legal imperative. We call on the international community to take a firm and united stand against Israel’s violations and ensure accountability under international law,” the statement concluded.
The Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters and diverted to the port of Ashdod. Its multinational crew, including prominent activist Greta Thunberg, remains in Israeli custody amid international demands for their release. (ILKHA)
