Four students were reportedly injured after an unidentified gunman opened fire outside a high school in the Turgutlu district of western Türkiye on Tuesday morning, according to initial reports from local media.

The shooting occurred at around 8 a.m. in the Albayrak neighborhood, outside the İnci Üzmez Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi, as students were arriving at school.

Initial reports said an unidentified individual approached the area and opened fire with a shotgun, although the motive for the attack remained unclear. Four students were reported to have been wounded in the incident.

A call was placed to Türkiye’s 112 Emergency Call Center after students were reportedly injured. Police officers and medical teams were quickly dispatched to the scene.

Security forces cordoned off the area as emergency and investigative teams responded to the shooting. Local reports said a large number of police and medical personnel were sent to the school following the attack.

Families and other residents also gathered outside the school as news of the shooting spread, while authorities continued their investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

The identity of the suspected shooter and the motive for the attack had not been officially established in the initial reports. Authorities were expected to examine evidence from the scene and available security-camera footage as part of the investigation.

The incident comes amid renewed attention in Türkiye to security around schools following several serious school-related shooting incidents earlier this year. In April, the Interior and Education ministries announced that measures concerning security around schools would be reviewed following attacks in Şanlıurfa and Kahramanmaraş.

The situation in Turgutlu remained under investigation, with further information on the condition of the injured students and whether the suspected attacker had been apprehended awaited from authorities. (ILKHA)
