Türkiye hits record $278 billion in annual exports, says trade minister
Türkiye’s June exports grew 21.9% year-on-year to almost $25 billion, while imports rose 23.1% to $35.3 billion, the Trade Ministry reported.
In a post on social media, Şimşek said exports increased by 10.2% year-on-year in the second quarter, lifting annualized exports to $277.9 billion. Imports, meanwhile, rose 4.6%, reflecting what he described as a more balanced trend in foreign trade.
Şimşek said Türkiye's export performance had remained resilient despite persistent uncertainty in global trade, attributing the outcome to the government's economic policies and improving macroeconomic fundamentals.
He cautioned that rising global energy prices could gradually weigh on the foreign trade balance in the coming months but said the current account deficit was expected to widen only modestly and remain at manageable levels.
"Our economic policies continue to strengthen resilience against external shocks while supporting a lasting and sustainable improvement in the external balance," Şimşek said.
The latest figures suggest Türkiye's export sector maintained its momentum in the second quarter despite weaker global demand and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties affecting international trade.
The government has identified reducing external imbalances and strengthening macroeconomic stability among the key objectives of its economic program, with officials expecting disciplined fiscal and monetary policies to support sustainable growth while keeping the current account deficit under control.(ILKHA)
