UN official calls for investigation as Israeli airstrikes kill nine children in Gaza

Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), has strongly condemned the Israeli occupation forces' bombing of a UN facility in northern Gaza that killed nine children, including a two-week-old infant.
In a post on the social media platform X, Lazzarini reported that the attack occurred on Wednesday when Israeli forces targeted a UNRWA building in the Jabalia area of northern Gaza. The building, which had previously served as a health center, had already sustained significant damage due to the ongoing conflict. At the time of the strike, it was sheltering around 700 displaced people.
Lazzarini revealed that, tragically, nine children lost their lives in the attack, while others were injured. He emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that even rubble had become a target, as Israeli forces continued to strike areas where displaced civilians had sought refuge.
The UNRWA Commissioner-General stressed that, despite the attack, many of those sheltering in the building remained there, as they had nowhere else to go amidst the ongoing bombardment in Gaza.
"Since the beginning of the aggression, more than 300 UN buildings have been damaged or completely destroyed," Lazzarini added. "Furthermore, over 700 people have been killed while seeking refuge in UN facilities throughout Gaza."
Lazzarini condemned the continued attacks on UN facilities, staff, and operations, calling these actions a blatant violation of international law. He also urged for an independent investigation into the strikes on UN facilities in Gaza.
The deaths of innocent children sheltering in a UN building have drawn widespread condemnation from the international community, further escalating calls for accountability and an end to the violence. (ILKHA)
