UN General Assembly concludes general debate

The general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly concluded on Monday after bringing together world leaders and senior officials to discuss major international issues, including peace, sustainable development, human rights and reform of the United Nations.
In his closing remarks, President of the General Assembly Halilur Rahman said 194 delegations participated in the debate. The speakers included 113 heads of state and government, one crown prince, 11 vice presidents, seven deputy prime ministers and 48 ministers, reflecting broad participation by UN member states.
Rahman said this year's debate covered a broad range of global challenges, including peace and security, sustainable development, human rights, UN reform and the selection of the next UN secretary-general. He added that emerging issues such as artificial intelligence also featured in the discussions, reflecting their growing importance on the international agenda.
He noted that the theme of this year's debate, "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All," resonated throughout the discussions, with many leaders emphasizing the need to strengthen international cooperation in addressing global challenges.
In his closing address, Rahman urged member states to remain committed to peace, sustainable development, human rights and meaningful institutional reform.
"Let us steadfastly refuse to give up on peace. Let us remain firmly committed to achieving sustainable development. Let us stand behind the principles of human rights without discrimination. Let us guide technological transformation in the service of humanity. Let us pursue meaningful, representative and fair reforms. And let us restore trust by building an organization that delivers for all," he said.
Following the conclusion of the general debate, the 81st session of the General Assembly will continue with committee meetings and negotiations on resolutions covering a wide range of international issues.(ILKHA)
