UN Chief reports progress in Cyprus talks

UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced that constructive discussions between Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar have led to significant progress on trust-building measures for Cyprus.
Speaking at UN Headquarters in New York, Guterres highlighted the realization of four previously agreed initiatives, with technical work ongoing for two others and new cooperative efforts established.
The leaders reviewed six trust-building initiatives agreed upon in March. Four have been successfully implemented: the establishment of a technical committee on youth, initiatives addressing environment and climate change, restoration of cemeteries, and an agreement on demining, pending final technical details. Discussions continue on the remaining two initiatives, which involve opening four crossing points on the divided island and developing solar energy in the buffer zone.
In a step forward, Christodoulides and Tatar reached a common understanding on new initiatives, including creating a consultative body for civil society engagement, exchanging cultural artifacts, improving air quality monitoring, and tackling microplastic pollution. Guterres emphasized the urgency of implementing all initiatives to benefit all Cypriots.
The Secretary-General announced plans to meet both leaders again during the UN General Assembly’s high-level week in September, with another informal meeting scheduled later this year. “There’s a long road ahead,” Guterres said, underscoring the importance of continued dialogue for a future that serves all Cypriots.
The United Nations continues to play a pivotal role in supporting dialogue toward a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue. While formal negotiations have not resumed due to insufficient common ground, the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), deployed since 1964, remains active in maintaining stability across the island.
The discussions reflect a renewed commitment to cooperation on youth, environment, culture, and civil society, signaling hope for progress in the long-standing Cyprus issue. (ILKHA)
