Ukrainian drone attack kills four in Russia’s Novorossiysk

A Ukrainian drone attack on the southern Russian port city of Novorossiysk overnight killed at least four people, including a child, and injured 29 others, Russian officials said Wednesday.
Veniamin Kondratyev, governor of Russia’s Krasnodar region, said the attack caused casualties and damage in several areas.
Novorossiysk, a strategically important Black Sea port, has increasingly come under Ukrainian drone attacks. The city serves as a major outlet for Russian oil and grain exports, making it an important part of the country’s maritime trade infrastructure.
Earlier Wednesday, Novorossiysk Mayor Andrei Kravchenko said debris from a Ukrainian drone fell onto several businesses and narrowly missed a residential building. The falling debris also sparked fires in parts of the city, according to local authorities.
Drone debris was also reported in the nearby resort city of Anapa.
Kondratyev said falling debris damaged three residential buildings and a kindergarten. No casualties were reported in Anapa.
The attacks prompted emergency services to respond to fires and damage across the affected areas, while authorities continued to assess the extent of the destruction.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses had shot down nearly 600 Ukrainian drones overnight, describing the incident as part of a large-scale Ukrainian aerial attack.
The ministry did not immediately provide details on how many drones were launched in total or specify how many were intercepted over each region.
Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian military and energy infrastructure far from the front lines as Kyiv seeks to disrupt Moscow’s logistics and economic capacity. Novorossiysk has emerged as a particularly important target because of its strategic role in Russia’s Black Sea operations and energy exports.
The latest attack highlights the continuing expansion of long-range drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine, with civilian areas increasingly exposed to the consequences of strikes and falling debris far from the main battlefield. (ILKHA)
